Amrullah Saleh, former vice president of Afghanistan, has said that the TAPI project is effectively halted under Taliban rule and no longer feasible.
In a post on the social media platform X, Saleh wrote that given the current geopolitical situation in the region, the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India gas pipeline project is no longer viable, adding that under Taliban control, the project “will not advance beyond Kandahar Province.”
He stressed that the implementation of such large-scale economic projects requires stability, a legitimate system, and rule of law in Afghanistan.
The TAPI project, launched in 2015, was designed to transport 33 billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas annually through Afghanistan to Pakistan and India.
Since the Taliban’s return to power in the summer of 2021, the project’s progress has faced uncertainty and stagnation.
