Local sources in Herat province report that 15 Afghan citizens, including women and children, have died while attempting to enter Iran through smuggling routes.
According to these sources, the victims lost their lives due to a severe cold wave while trying to cross the Islam Qala border illegally toward the Taybad areas of Iran.
Based on available information, the migrants had entered difficult and remote border routes over the past two nights; however, due to extreme cold and becoming stranded along the way, a number of them died. Local sources confirm that the bodies of at least 15 individuals have been transferred to the districts of Kohsan and Adraskan in Herat, while several others have been taken to hospitals and morgues in the city of Taybad, Iran.
Despite confirmation of the incident, the exact number of casualties remains unclear. Sources say the death toll may be higher than the initial figures, and the incident requires further investigation. If ultimately confirmed, the event will be recorded as a humanitarian tragedy along the Afghanistan–Iran border.
