The United Nations has called on the ruling authorities in Afghanistan to immediately repeal discriminatory laws and decrees and to comply with international human rights obligations.

UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said on Tuesday, in response to the newly announced penal regulations of Kabul courts, that these rules violate the fundamental human rights of the people of Afghanistan, particularly women and girls.

He also confirmed that Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, raised the issue during her recent visit to Kabul, urging the ruling group to repeal anti-women regulations and respect equal rights and human dignity.

DiCarlo traveled to Kabul last week for a three-day visit, during which she met with senior officials of the Kabul administration, as well as women and media representatives.
